About Board Foot Calculator
The Board Foot Calculator is the standard purchasing tool for woodworkers. Rough-sawn lumber is not sold by length (linear feet) like 2x4s at Home Depot; it is sold by volume, known as the "Board Foot" (FBM).
What is a Board Foot?
1 Board Foot = A piece of wood 12" wide x 12" long x 1" thick (144 cubic inches).
Formula: (Thickness" × Width" × Length") / 144
Why Use It?
When buying Walnut, Cherry, or Oak from a hardwood dealer, the price is listed as "$8.50/bd ft". To know the cost of a board that is 8 inches wide, 6 feet long, and 2 inches thick, you must calculate the board footage first.
How to Use
Enter the thickness (inches), width (inches), and length (inches or feet). The tool calculates the total board feet.
